Apple to bring Touch ID to its smartwatches

Apple may bring Touch ID to smartwatches – first model revealed

According to a new report, Apple is working on adding Touch ID to its smartwatches. The feature is expected to launch as early as next year with Apple Watch Ultra 4.

The report, based on Apple’s internal developer code, references “AppleMesa”, a codename historically linked to Touch ID. This suggests the feature is still in the prototype stage, meaning this year’s models won’t have it.

Due to the compact size of smartwatches, integrating a sensor is challenging. Apple may embed it into a button, like on the iPad Air, or even integrate it under the display, similar to Android devices.

Another recent rumor claims that Apple Watch will undergo a major redesign in 2025. Touch ID is expected to be part of this change. Moreover, the 2026 models are rumored to feature a new processor.
