iPhone 17 Pro faces “scratchgate”: Easily scratched design raises concerns
Durability tests confirmed that the iPhone 17 Pro series scratches much more easily than expected, sparking a controversy dubbed “scratchgate”.
Users report that the Deep Blue and Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max are especially prone to scratches.
YouTuber Zack Nelson from JerryRigEverything showed in his tests that the sharp edges around the large rear camera module are particularly vulnerable.
According to him, the issue lies in the anodized coating, which doesn’t adhere well to sharp edges. Everyday contact with items like keys or coins can cause chipping, especially on Blue and Orange variants.
While the new aluminum unibody design helps with heat dissipation, the scratch issue damages Apple’s reputation. For now, the only reliable way to protect your pricey iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max is to use a case.
