World’s smallest speaker for smartwatches unveiled

xMEMS Labs has introduced the world’s thinnest speaker – Sycamore-W, designed specifically for wearable devices worn on the wrist. With just 1 mm thickness and 150 mg weight, it’s a breakthrough for compact audio solutions.

The California-based company claims that Sycamore-W is approximately 70% smaller than standard speakers used in today’s smartwatches. With a length of 2 mm and thickness of 1 mm, it offers a huge advantage where size and weight matter most.

Solid-state tech offers compact power

This solid-state micro speaker uses thin-film piezo actuators to stimulate a silicon membrane that generates sound waves. According to xMEMS, this design requires less internal space, yet delivers strong mid-bass performance and better response at high frequencies compared to dynamic drivers.

It also boasts exceptional durability — the Sycamore-W can withstand up to 10,000 g of force and is IP58-rated for component-level dust protection.

xMEMS plans to begin mass production in Q2 2026. The company will continue manufacturing the original Sycamore models for smart glasses, open-ear headphones, and laptops, while also announcing new models for specific use cases in the coming months.
